We Love It: Leupold Performance Eyewear

Daily breaks for fresh air during the quarantine gave us time to check out Leupold’s new sport optics line.

Leupold Performance Eyewear Katmai Main

I look for versatility and durability in all of my accessories, and I recently discovered sunglasses that are likely my new go-to pairs. During outdoor exercise (in between practicing social distancing and working at home), I’ve been testing Leupold’s new Katmai and Switchback models. When the quarantine ends, no doubt you will find me still wearing the sporty Katmai shades (top) while hiking the greater Washington, D.C. area or hopping on a boat in Annapolis. Sailing is one of my hobbies, so the hydrophobic coating will be useful for dispelling dust and sea spray. They are not rated for ballistic protection, so when it's time to get back to the outdoor range, I'll swap them out for the equally practical and stylish Switchback (below), which hold an ANSI Z87.1+ ballistic rating, exceeding high-velocity impact standards for eye protection. This pair will come in handy in shielding my eyes from both UV rays and ejected casings.

The Leupold brand is best known for its quality optics like binoculars, riflescopes and rangefinders, so it’s no surprise they’ve extended some high-end features into its new Performance Eyewear line. Their technical function is essential, but equally important is the fact that the glasses are comfortable and stylish enough to wear to any outdoor event. From brunch to browsing book carts to setting sail in 20 knots, I can do it all in either of these lightweight frames. The classic styling (mine are in matte black color, but they are offered in other finishes) pairs perfectly with a printed sundress and sandals, or a tech shirt and hiking boots.

I’m hard on my sunglasses—they get tossed from packed purse to salty drybag and back all summer long. The scratch-resistant lenses on these Leupolds are a lifesaver when you’re trying to get the most out of 12-hour days. I would recommend these to any woman whose summer plans include sunrise hunting, hiking to your favorite lunch spot, and afternoons at the outdoor range. Snag a pair before summer starts without you!
