Backcountry hunts can be physically and mentally demanding, especially if you’re not well prepared. Having the right gear is crucial, and this becomes even more important when you're away from civilization for weeks at a time. While some gear is essential for everyone, this list is tailored specifically for women, considering that much of the equipment is traditionally designed for men. Properly fitting gear can make a significant difference in comfort and performance. Here are some tips to help women prepare for long backcountry hunts:

Dry Shampoo: The thought of not washing your hair or bathing for two weeks can deter some women from backcountry trips. A small bottle of dry shampoo can help. Dove makes an unscented 5oz dry shampoo that’s perfect for hunting trips. If you have long hair, keep it in a braid to prevent tangling and maintain manageability throughout the trip.

Dessert: Having a dessert each night adds a touch of enjoyment to your hunts. Freeze-dried desserts from companies like On Point Adventure Foods are delicious and made with real ingredients. Bringing a dessert for each night can make your trip more enjoyable and something I highly recommend.

Sleeping Bag: A proper sleeping bag is essential for staying warm and getting a good night's rest. Consider packability and weight, but don’t compromise on warmth. Choose a down sleeping bag rated for colder temperatures than you expect. Keep a warm set of pajamas, a neck gaiter, and socks in your sleeping bag for extra comfort. For my last hunt I actually purchased a sleeping bag that was made specifically for women so it was sized and shaped better with more insulation in the feet. Overall I was very happy with the performance and something to look into for future trips.

Clothing: Comfortable clothing is key to a successful hunt. DSG Outerwear, designed by women for women, offers everything from rain gear to clothing for extreme temperatures. Their gear fits well, looks great, and performs exceptionally. They continuously improve their products based on feedback, ensuring comfort and effectiveness in the field.

External Heat Source: ThermaCare wraps are excellent for maintaining warmth during hunts and at night. They offer wraps for your neck and lower back that provide long-lasting heat without burning your skin or emitting scent. Keeping your kidneys warm from that lower back heat source helps your entire body stay warm.

Wet Wipes: Cleanliness is important in the field, and wet wipes are a convenient solution. Wildlife Research Center’s washcloth wipes are thick and effective, leaving no sticky residue. Test your wipes before your trip to ensure they suit your needs, and bring plenty.

Dry Socks & Clothes for Sleeping: Changing into dry clothes at night is crucial. Keep your dry clothes in your sleeping bag for easy access. This simple practice makes a significant difference, providing comfort and something to look forward to each day.

Garmin InReach: Staying connected is important, especially for peace of mind. As a mom, I like knowing that I can be reached in case of emergencies. The Garmin InReach allows for communication without constant connectivity, giving you peace of mind while enjoying your hunt. Ours connects directly with our phone so once I turn it on, my text messages can come through if anyone needs something and I can write back if needed. I do not set it up for emails, but simply for text messages to ensure my family and loved ones are safe.

Properly Fitted Backpack: A well-fitted backpack is essential. Pack the heaviest items close to your body and keep frequently used items easily accessible. Ensure you have space for a quarter or large portion of meat once you have your game down and have a plan in place to keep your other gear protected from the blood that may come with the meat or hide. Snacks and a hydration bladder should be easily reachable without removing your pack.

Hydration Packets: Staying hydrated is crucial. HOIST hydration packets add flavor and essential electrolytes to your water, improving hydration. Available in peach mango, fruit punch, and grape, these packets make drinking water more enjoyable and effective and something I would highly recommend. Bring extras though because as the others get a taste of yours they are going to expect you to share!

By ensuring you have the right gear tailored to your needs, you can enhance your comfort and effectiveness on long backcountry hunts and these are just a few of the tips I have learned along the way.
