Domestic Defense
A woman who was being battered by her boyfriend defended herself with his own firearm—shooting him in the leg. Here’s what happened, according to reports:
Upon returning home from a local bar, the couple engaged in an argument on their porch, which was corroborated by neighbors who heard them. At some point the man had removed a gun from his vehicle and placed it on the porch. During the argument, the man then began battering the woman, knocking her to the ground and strangling her to the point of it interfering with her breathing. When the man let up, the woman was able to get up and grab the nearby gun. Seeing that, the man charged the woman. In fear for her life, the woman discharged the firearm, hitting the man once in the leg. The couple then got into a vehicle to go to the hospital, which is when police arrived at the scene after responding to calls by neighbors for shots fired. The man told police that his girlfriend shot him by accident. However, obvious physical evidence of injuries on the woman—several broken fingernails, scratches on both arms, and dirt and leaves in her hair—led them to arrest the man for domestic battery by strangulation, charges he will face from jail after being released from the hospital. The woman was not charged. (fox13news.com; Brooksville, Fla.; 12/23/23)
Chicago CCW
Concealed-carry holders will universally tell you they hope they never have to draw their firearm on a person—but are prepared to do so in defense of their lives or their loved ones’ lives. Such is the case for a longtime CCW holder in Chicago, a mother who was forced to protect her daughter from a would-be home intruder. The mother said her 18-year-old daughter had just returned to her bedroom after bathing and saw somebody attempting to climb through her window. She alerted her mother, who immediately sprung into action, arming herself and running into her daughter’s bedroom where she saw the man hanging onto her window. The mother warned the man that she was armed and that she would shoot him. However, the man continued to advance into the room, which is when the mother fired at him, hitting him once in the leg. “I didn’t even know he got hit,” she told reporters. Police later located the 36-year-old injured suspect on a nearby street. He was taken to a hospital in fair condition, with charges against him pending. (abc7chicago.com; Chicago, Ill., 9/8/24)
Hostage Help
A woman who was taken hostage by a man ended the situation herself when she shot her abductor. According to reports, police responded to a disturbance called in on a Friday afternoon. But before they arrived, the 9-1-1 caller said the suspect had left the scene and that he was possibly holding a female held against her will. Officers located a vehicle matching the one described by witnesses, and attempted to make a traffic stop. The driver failed to stop and sped away, which is when a chase ensued. According to the police chief, “the male driver had been shot by a firearm that was inside the vehicle,” and it was the victim who pulled the trigger. The suspect was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The victim was also evaluated. As of this posting, the specific charges against the suspect had not been released.
