Woe be to anyone who dare threaten a woman when she is babysitting her grandchild. One Albuquerque man found this out the hard way when he was shot by a grandmother after he broke into her house. Here’s what we know:

A would-be auto-theft suspect who had been driving a stolen truck finally came to a stop after police used spike strips to flatten his tires—but not before continuing to flee with the truck on its rims and crashing it into a curb. The man fled on foot and ran into the neighborhood where he had crashed. The incident occurred at about 8 p.m. About 90 minutes later, 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call from the grandmother, saying she had shot an intruder in her home who took her keys and told her he did not want to go to jail.

The woman reportedly told police she had been with her 4-year-old grandson when she heard someone inside the home. It was then that she encountered the 32-year-old man, whom she said seemed angry, telling her he needed her keys.

The woman told police that she thought about arming herself right then but she wasn’t sure if there was time to do so if the intruder was also armed. Instead she took him to a bowl in the kitchen that contained a lot of keys, letting the man take some of his choosing before he left.

It was then that the woman grabbed her own gun and took her grandchild into the bedroom. Moments later the man was back in her hallway, demanding more keys.

The woman said she pointed the gun at the man and ordered him to leave, but instead he began advancing toward her. The woman, in fear for her life and that of her grandchild, fired at him once, striking him. She then reportedly applied pressure to his wound until police arrived.

The man reportedly will be booked into jail after being released from the hospital. (abqjournal.com3/25/24; Albuquerque, N.M.)
